Activities at the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre
The
Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre is not a commercial riding yard. We take
children from age seven, they join our Branch of the Pony Club and take
part in stable management and riding lessons. Children with various
special needs are integrated with able bodied children and young
people.
We are a member group of Riding for the Disabled association. Many local schools bring groups of children to ride at the Centre and we provide opportunities for work experience students. The Centre has its own Pony Club Branch. Throughout the year we have lectures and demonstrations on stable management and horse care.

There is an annual Horse and Hound Show in May and a fundraising Horses in Harmony concert in July. Please see the Events page for further details.
Safety
The
ponies at the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre are very well schooled and
used to being handled and ridden by a wide variety of people. However,
all horses can bite, kick or be careless with their feet under certain
circumstances and all riding involves some element of risk. Safety
concerns are paramount and all riders and volunteers are provided with
training to ensure the maximum safe conditions. All staff and
volunteers are required to have a Criminal Record Bureau check.

The Pony Club

The Pony Club was established in 1929 as the junior branch of the Institute of the Horse to provide activities and instruction for young horse owners. Both organisations later formed the basis for the foundation of the British Horse Society in 1947. The Pony Club was later opened to non-owners through branches based in riding establishments. The Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre Pony Club Branch was established in 1992 as part of Pony Club Area 12. The young people work for Pony Club Efficiency Tests.
Pony Club members take part in:
- Stable management courses
- Achievement badges
- Riding Tests
- Competitions.
RDA
Riding
for the Disabled was founded in 1965 as the Advisory Council
on
Riding for the Disabled. It has 500 member groups providing riding and
driving for 25,000 disabled participants. From the beginning it has
been committed to the physical and emotional benefits of riding,
driving and stable work, a philosophy fully endorsed and enhanced by
the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre.
Osteopathy
We have our own Osteopath at the Centre who works with both able bodied and disabled riders, aiming to improve the therapeutic value of their riding experience.
